What Rehab is Really Like

If you have made the decision to enter rehab then you are probably scared about it will be life to enter those doors. But remember that you have made the hardest step of all and that is admitting that you need help. First you need to understand that rehab facilities are not at all like what you see on TV and reality shows. Rehab facilities do not have locks on any of the doors and you are free to leave at any time. If you are going to rehab because you have been forced to go by law, you can still walk out of the facility but you will have to face punishment later by law. There are no locks on the doors because the facility only wants to help people who want to be helped. If you are not ready to face the fact that you have an addiction, then you are not ready to get sober. You will have not only wasted your time and theirs but they are wasting facility space on someone who does not want to be helped.

However, if you are really seeking help, the first thing that you will go through is detox. Many facilities have their own detoxification programs inside the center. This step will be painful and difficult but you will get through it.

You will also go through a period of education which will force you to look at your addiction honestly. You will have to let go any denial about your addiction. You will also be taught about alcoholism and drug addiction and what the consequences of the addiction will have on your life if you continue to use.

You will also go through a large amount of counseling. Counseling will consist of both individual and group sessions where you meet with certified counselors who are trained to handle addiction. You will learn how to avoid circumstances where you might give into addiction again and you will learn how to cope with your addiction. In group sessions you will learn to seek support from other individuals.
