Summary

Misunderstanding and myths related to suicide risk among incarcerated individuals--and how to best assess that risk--continue to exist. This 6-hour course is highly-interactive and covers 10 key issues you should be aware of if you assess suicide risk in a correctional setting or supervise others who do. The training focuses on standard of care and best practices—to help save lives as well as reduce the risk of litigation. Current controversies in suicide risk assessment will be discussed and lessons learned from correctional suicide lawsuits will be highlighted.

Lisa Boesky, PhD
Lisa Boesky is a jail suicide expert and psychologist who has consulted with corrections for over 25 years—and has trained thousands of professionals on how to prevent suicides in correctional facilities. Lisa goes into jails to evaluate their suicide prevention policies/practices and provides recommendations for improvement. She serves as an opinion source for national media including USA Today, CNN, Fox News, & The Wall Street Journal, among others. Lisa is an experienced expert witness and forensic consultant on lawsuits involving incarcerated individuals who kill themselves in custody.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain one of the most important issues suicide risk assessment should focus on--but usually does not
  • Describe one key controversy regarding who is most at risk for suicide in corrections and three ways to positively address it
  • List three common suicide risk documentation mistakes and the negative impact on litigation
  • List three ways to improve the effectiveness of safety planning
