Summary
Competency restoration treatment is not only extremely expensive, but in terms of public safety, it can be short-sighted. Over the past decade, we have seen a significant shift, in terms of policy and funding, toward community-based treatment of justice-system involved adults with behavioral health disorders. With the enactment of Senate Bills 1323, 1400, and 42, that shift is now complete, and we can expect to see the number of committed IST defendants dwindle as the number of diverted IST defendants continues to increase. In this one-hour webinar, Deputy Public Defender Laura Arnold will explain the new legislation, focusing on its anticipated impact on existing state and local systems.
